Stefon Diggs is already changing the Commanders offense in training camp despite being on the team for only a few days
Everyone knew it was just a matter of time before Stefon Diggs would become a major boon for the Commanders offense. I don’t think many people expected it to happen this quickly, though.
You don’t have to be a football expert to understand just how Stefon Diggs can elevate the Washington Commanders offense. The Commanders brought him in to play alongside Terry McLaurin, and that duo has tremendous potential in offensive coordinator David Blough’s system.
And sure enough, less than a week into camp, Diggs is already making a significant impact on the Commanders offense.
“I would say yeah, in some ways I have,” Dan Quinn told reporters when asked if he’s noticed more explosiveness from the Commanders offense since Diggs arrived. “There’s already been some explosive play passes. The interesting thing about Steph is he’s a smart player. He’s good against zone, knows how to sit down. Like, he’s good against both, you know, in terms of zone and man-to-man. He knows how to get himself open. His football smarts and instincts are— I thought they were going to be really high, and they’re already past that. That.
“So we’re in the early days and he’s still learning it, but yeah, he’s already making an impact for
So far, the Commanders are getting exactly what they were looking for when they signed Diggs. Time and time again, we see late camp signings where fans expect immediate results, and usually there are bumps in the road. It takes longer than people want for things to start clicking.
That’s not the case with Diggs and Washington’s offense, however.
Stefon Diggs’ leadership could be even more valuable than his production for the Commanders offense
Per reports out of Commanders training camp, Diggs is making plays and getting open consistently. But what might matter even more is the leadership he’s bringing to the receiver room. There have been plenty of instances where observers have noted Diggs coaching up younger players, teaching them route nuances and the finer details of the position.
“My biggest thing is I always try to push the guys around me to be the best version of themselves,” Diggs told reporters after his first practice. “We’re slowly kind of building that already. This is day one [and] we had a lot of conversations, more than I thought we would have. Guys coming up to me and, you know, me just throwing a little gem here and there. You know, I’m I’m older. I’ve been around the game for a little while now, like I said earlier. …
“… I’m just trying to give them everything that I got, and at the same time, more show than tell. You know, I can say a bunch of hoopla, but I’d rather just go out there and hoop and show you why I did what I did, or kind of just communicate through the actions.”
That’s only going to make the Commanders’ receiver group better as a whole. So Washington isn’t just getting production from Diggs on the practice field. The team is also building a better infrastructure through his mentorship of the younger players in the room.
The best part is Diggs has only been with the Commanders for a few days. The more comfortable he gets, the more he learns the playbook, and the more chemistry that builds between him and quarterback Jayden Daniels, things are only going to get better from here.
