Commanders QB Jayden Daniels is a ‘full go’ ahead of week 5 matchup vs Giants

Jayden Daniels logged a full practice Wednesday, and his answer to a pointed question about injury risk says plenty about his mindset heading into a big matchup against the Giants.

Jayden Daniels is back on the practice field in full capacity, and the Washington Commanders could not need him more.

The Commanders’ Wednesday injury report listed the quarterback as a full participant in practice. To make things even better, Washington expects Daniels to return for Week 5 against the New York Giants, as offensive coordinator David Blough confirmed to reporters Thursday that Jayden Daniels is a “full go” ahead of Week 5.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn has been open about it. Quinn said the plan is for Daniels to start Sunday. He also said Daniels wanted to play in London, where he traveled with the team and practiced as well. That tells you how badly the guy wants to be out there.

Wanting to play and being cleared to play are two different things. This week, it looks like those two things finally line up.

Embrace the brace

Daniels has fully adopted the “embrace the brace” message. The elbow brace isn’t going anywhere, and he isn’t pretending otherwise.

Daniels stated the brace “Is part of me for now. I just got to get used to it.”

That’s the right attitude. A quarterback who fights the brace in his own head is going to play tentative. A quarterback who accepts it as part of the uniform can just go play football.

Then came the best moment of the day. David Aldridge asked Daniels how he will balance the realities of playing football while knowing he is at injury risk with the elbow.

“Is it the fourth quarter?” Daniels responded.

That’s a quarterback answer. Set the bravado and the confidence aside for a second, because the substance underneath is what matters. Daniels isn’t going to play scared of the elbow, and he’s not going to spend his week talking about what could go wrong. Embrace the brace is the theme, and he’s sticking to it.

Why this week matters so much for Washington

Here’s the point: The timing could not be better for Daniels to come back, because Washington is sitting at 1-3.

The Commanders can’t afford to drop a divisional game at home. A 1-4 start with a loss to New York would put Washington in a hole that gets very hard to climb out of in the NFC East.

The good news? This game is very winnable. The Giants are starting Jameis Winston, a backup quarterback. Winston can make throws, and he can also hand you the ball at the worst possible moment. Getting your franchise quarterback back against a team starting its backup is the exact kind of matchup a struggling team needs to get right.

Daniels doesn’t have to be perfect Sunday. He has to be Jayden Daniels. Move the chains, extend plays when it breaks down and let the offense breathe again. Do that against a Winston-led New York team and Washington should be 2-3 by the end of the weekend.
