Rookie CB Jermod McCoy is showcasing a mental trait that the Raiders had to have been hooked on in the pre-draft process
The Las Vegas Raiders traded up in the fourth round to draft rookie cornerback Jermod McCoy, and he has a chip on his shoulder.
The Las Vegas Raiders have made a habit of drafting players with character, and fourth-round cornerback Jermod McCoy fits that mold as well as anyone on the roster.
McCoy, who was once considered the best cornerback in the 2026 NFL Draft class, fell to the fourth round because of a knee injury that scared every team in the league. The Raiders traded up to grab him, betting on both his elite talent and his relentless mentality. So far in training camp, that bet looks like it could pay off in a major way.
McCoy’s talent was never the question
When you look at the McCoy pick, it was never about whether he could play. The Raiders didn’t just like him as a prospect. They loved him enough to move up in the fourth round to make sure they got him. Vegas could end up with three Day 3 picks who become breakout players in McCoy, Hezekiah Massis, and Malik Vincent. But McCoy’s ceiling stands apart from the group.
At full potential, McCoy is one of the most talented players on the Raiders’ roster. His combination of coverage ability and ball skills made him a consensus first-round talent before the knee issue derailed his draft stock. The talent was always there. The question was whether his body would cooperate.
The mentality that makes McCoy different
What separates McCoy from the typical mid-round project is what he brings off the field in terms of personality and drive. He’s relentless, and he carries himself with the belief that nobody is going to be better than him. When asked recently if he felt like he was the best cornerback in the draft, McCoy said 100%. As he should.
But the quote that really stood out came when McCoy was asked if he carries a chip on his shoulder for everyone passing on him.
“It will be with me forever. It’s going to keep fueling me,” McCoy said.
That’s exactly what you love to hear. Every team in the league passed on him, including the Raiders for the first three rounds. That kind of fuel doesn’t burn out. McCoy has the talent to be elite, and it’s obvious he has the personality and the mentality to match. Now it’s about putting it all together on the field. He’s doing that at training camp.
Progress in training camp has been encouraging
So far, McCoy has progressed well in training camp. He’s already said that he feels much better now than he did when he first arrived in Las Vegas, and that’s the kind of trajectory you want to see from a player managing the type of injury he dealt with. The training staff seems to be managing him perfectly.
There’s not much else to say about whether the knee will hold him out from playing this season. Now it’s about stacking up days, building toward football shape, and potentially earning a starting spot on this roster. He should be able to do that, but it will take time. Either way, McCoy has enough fuel to keep him going. He won’t be stopping anytime soon.
