Las Vegas Raiders made a new staff hire just days after losing their preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals
The Las Vegas Raiders are going young and bright-minded, as they have hired Alabama assistant wide receivers coach Torrey Gill as a quality control coach.
The Las Vegas Raiders are always trying to get better, whether it’s the roster or the coaching staff. Head coach Klint Kubiak is in his first year as a head coach, so when it comes to the staff, he wants as many coaches around him as possible to help him and make the team better.
We already know the kind of coaches he brought in to help him. There’s a mix of young, up-and-coming guys who are bright. There’s also a mix of veteran coaches who have seen a lot in this league. But now, Kubiak sees an opportunity to add another young coach who could help them.
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Raiders are hiring Alabama assistant wide receivers coach Torrey Gill as a quality control coach. This is a good move, but many fans don’t know why. Who is the Raiders’ new coach, Torrey Gill?
When JaMarcus Shepard left Alabama and coaching wide receivers to become the head coach of Oregon State, there was a thought that the Tide might promote from within with a rising coach like Gill. In his two seasons with Alabama, Gill helped coach a 17-year-old, 170-pound freshman WR Ryan Williams to a breakout year in the SEC.
In 2025, he was integral in the development of Lotzier Brooks late in Alabama’s season, and he helped transform Germie Bernard from a fringe day two pick to a top-50 selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. That kind of experience will be valuable in a wide receiver room that is green and young with players like Malik Benson and Jack Bech. In my opinion, it’s a good move for a quality-control hire.
Gill participated in the Raiders’ preseason as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. This marked his second experience with the team under the program, after spending four months with the Las Vegas organization from May to August 2023.
Hailing from Corvallis, Oregon, Gill was originally expected to join Shephard at Oregon State as the Beavers’ wide receivers coach. Instead, he remained at Alabama until the Raiders presented him with a full-time role, prompting his move to Las Vegas. The Raiders seem to be going for a guy who they think can help them now and in the future.
