ESPN gives a backhanded compliment to Tennessee basketball, but it’s one just about every Vols fan would take
The Vols could be on tap for a special year in 2026-27.
It was a very eventful offseason for the men’s and women’s Tennessee basketball program. There was plenty of turnover on both teams, and for Rick Barnes’ squad in particular, they managed to pick up some notable talents that could have them ready to continue their climb to that elusive first ever Final Four trip for the program.
Headlined by highly-coveted Wake Forest transfer Juke Harris, the Vols have the potential star power to contend in both the SEC regular season and in postseason play.
But how high is the Vols’ ceiling in 2026-27? ESPN college basketball writer Myron Medcalf addressed and answered exactly that question recently. He evaluated the prospects of every team, and the Vols fell outside of three teams listed as “national championship”, falling into “Final Four”.
ESPN’s Myron Medcalf says Tennessee Vols’ ceiling in 2026-27 is reaching the Final Four, but not winning the national championship
“Losing your top six scorers would be an unsettling development for most coaches,” Medcalf wrote. “Not for Rick Barnes, who has thrived by hitting the reset button. He has had an All-SEC first team selection on his roster for five consecutive seasons — with Wake Forest transfer Juke Harris, who scored 28 points or more in seven games last season, poised to be the team’s breakout star. Plus, the Vols have finished in the top three in adjusted defensive efficiency in four of the past five years. Despite the collection of new faces, Barnes keeps the system humming.”
I find it interesting that Texas is in the national championship conversation, but not Tennessee, to be honest. Texas has a great coach in Sean Miller, but that haven’t been knocking on the door like Tennessee has been. The Vols have reached the Elite Eight three years in a row.
That being said, a season that ends in a trip to the Final Four in Detroit followed by a loss in the national semis would be something that a big chunk of Vol fans would wrap their arms around and accept without hesitation. Just getting there would be a huge leap forward for the program and would finally result in that banner
And frankly, if you’re good enough to get to the Final Four, you’re good enough to win it, so not having that ceiling reach all the way to a title seems a bit silly.
We’ll find out of Tennessee is up to the task in about two and a half months, when Barnes’ squad starts their run at that elusive Final Four.
