According to a report from On3, Vols redshirt freshman George MacIntyre threw an interception in Tennessee’s first fall scrimmage on Saturday.

It was the only interception reported from the scrimmage, which was closed to the media.

MacIntyre is battling true freshman Faizon Brandon for Tennessee’s starting quarterback job, but I don’t think the interception in the scrimmage is going to have a big impact on the outcome of the competition.

That’s because it was apparently just a hell of a play by Vols senior linebacker Arion Carter.

On3’s Pete Nakos noted that the “credit goes to linebacker Arion Carter” after “he tipped MacIntyre’s pass and intercepted it.”

Tennessee posted some highlights from the scrimmage on Saturday evening and Carter’s incredible interception was included.

You can’t see the throw in the clip, but you can see the athletic catch that Carter made.

Based on the way the play has been described, I’m guessing that Carter jumped and tipped the pass and then made a ridiculous adjustment to dive to his left and catch the ball before it hit the ground.

Sometimes quarterbacks just have to tip their cap to the defender for making a play. I think this was one of those moments for MacIntyre.

As for Carter, this crazy play is a reminder of how much Tennessee will miss him while he’s suspended for the first two games of the season — especially against Georgia Tech in Week 2.
