New report says there’s a leader in Tennessee’s starting QB competition entering the Vols’ second fall scrimmage
The Tennessee Vols are in the midst of a starting quarterback competition between George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon.
The Tennessee Vols haven’t named a starting quarterback yet, but a leader has emerged in the competition.
After Tennessee’s first fall scrimmage, which was held this past Saturday, it sounds like true freshman Faizon Brandon is ahead in the battle according to a new report from On3’s Pete Nakos.
“Brandon completed multiple deep balls in Saturday’s scrimmage to take an early lead in the quarterback competition, sources told On3,” wrote Nakos. “Heupel is not ready to name a starter, but it could come following a second scrimmage later this week.”
Tennessee will hold its final fall scrimmage on August 22. It’s unclear when Vols head coach Josh Heupel will name a starter for the season opener against Furman, but it could come at any time after the second scrimmage.
Brandon is viewed as the player with the higher ceiling, and he’s a bigger threat in the run game. The narrative all summer was that Brandon was ahead in the battle, so it’s not a surprise to hear that he’s taken an early lead.
But regardless of who’s named the starter for Week 1, both quarterbacks are expected to see action early in the season.
