Tennessee Vols fans can exhale now that a popular nightmare scenario involving Tony Vitello has been wiped out
The Vols’ ex-coach won’t be going to one of Tennessee’s chief rivals any time soon.
Whether or not Tony Vitello would return to the college baseball ranks has been a question that many, both among Tennessee Vol fans and outside of Knoxville, have wondered amid a tough first season as the San Francisco Giants’ manager.
As it turns out, Vitello’s job appears to be safe — for now. Giants VP of Operations Buster Posey recently made that announcement.
But what if things go south in year two? Or what if Vitello makes a sudden decision that he likes the college game and shorter seasons better than the long MLB grind?
Some Vol fans had worried that Vitello’s connection to the University of Arkansas, where he worked before coming to Knoxville, could be a connection that leads him to succeed current head coach and his former boss, Dave Van Horn, when the long-time Razorbacks coach decides to hang them up.
Well, that worry can be kicked down the road quite a long ways, it seems. Per D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, Van Horn has signed an extension with Arkansas that will keep him under contract through the 2031 season.
Tony Vitello won’t be returning to Arkansas any time soon, thanks to Dave Van Horn contract extension
Vitello was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Razorbacks from 2014-2017. He has previously talked about how much the Arkansas program and it’s coaches has meant to him, which further fueled a (not so crazy) theory that perhaps he could end up there in short order if things didn’t work out with the Giants.
Well, if Vitello does indeed return to the college ranks relatively soon, it won’t be with a Razorbacks program that’s turned into quite the rivalry with the Vols over the last several years. And that’s something that Tennessee fans are likely feeling very relieved about.
