‘We’re good’ – It took Denver’s coaches only one play to see what they needed to see from a fast-rising young Broncos player

The Denver Broncos didn’t need to see much from one of their top young players in the preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Rookie running back Jonah Coleman is one of the players who’s been generating the most buzz this summer for the Denver Broncos.

Coleman, who will turn 23 later this week, was selected by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The former Washington Huskies standout had a strong training camp, and the Broncos are confident that he can be an impact player if called upon.

They’re so confident, in fact, that they only gave Coleman four touches in the team’s preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons last weekend.

One reason Coleman only got four touches is because the coaches saw all they needed to see on a 13 yard carry.

“I think after that one run, we all said on the headset, ‘We’re good,’” said Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb on Tuesday of Coleman. “He did what he needed to do, and he’s been great the last three weeks — just like Sean (Payton) said. He’s been consistent. We’ve been throwing a lot of installs at him and he’s been great at handling that. We’re satisfied with that entire room.”

Broncos head coach Sean Payton feels the same way about Jonah Coleman

Payton made some similar comments after the Broncos’ win over the Falcons.

“It’s just what we’ve been seeing (in camp),” said Payton when asked about Coleman after the game. “And then you see enough of it, and you’re like, ‘alright.’ He’s had a good camp, and I liked his balance coming out of some of the tackles.”

JK Dobbins will be the starting running back for the Broncos to start the season, and RJ Harvey will serve as the change of pace back. But it’s clear that Coleman is going to get some carries. And if something happens to Dobbins, it’ll likely be Coleman who becomes the new RB1.
