Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides latest injury update on RB Kenneth Walker, other players ahead of preseason Week 3
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared the latest injury news on Kenneth Walker, Trey Smith, Ashton Gillotte, Josh Simmons and more. This comes ahead of preseason Week 3 vs. the Seattle Seahawks.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided injury updates on Wednesday, Aug. 26, ahead of preseason Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.
The big update that everyone was waiting for? Chiefs RB Kenneth Walker, who missed practice on Tuesday with a foot injury. Coach Reid put concerns to bed about Walker, calling it more of an equipment malfunction than anything else.
“His shoe has been causing some swelling on his ankle,” Reid said. “We’re trying to get that down. He’s going to be OK.”
Walker did not participate in practice on Wednesday, marking his second consecutive missed practice. Expect him to be sidelined for preseason Week 3 against his former team. However, this shouldn’t impact his availability 19 days from now in the team’s opener against the Denver Broncos.
Which Kansas City Chiefs players won’t play in preseason Week 3 vs. the Seattle Seahawks?
Reid confirmed that starting QB Patrick Mahomes will not play in preseason Week 3 vs. the Seahawks. That’ll mark the first time in his career that he’s missed every preseason game.
“Well, listen, he’s looked good during the practices and doing the stuff,” Reid said of Mahomes. “This week, he was a scout team quarterback and a pretty good scout team quarterback, but he’s looked good. He’s looked strong, and obviously his attitude’s right.”
As for injured players, Coach Reid effectively ruled out seven others.
“As far as any injuries go, the guys that won’t play most likely are (Jack) Cochrane, Chamarri (Conner), Ashton (Gillotte), C.J. Hanson, Jimmy Holiday, Chris Oladokun is still in concussion protocol,” Reid said. “(Josh) Simmons will be out with the back, and then Tyreke Smith, and then we’ll just see.”
Reid said they’re getting Simmons’ back examined further, but most importantly giving it time to heal. He also said Gillotte (ruptured plantar fascia) has moved from a scooter to a walking boot, which is a positive sign for his recovery.
Other Kansas City Chiefs players who could miss preseason Week 3
Even with starting RG Trey Smith returning to practice this week, I wouldn’t expect him out there against the Seahawks on Friday.
“I didn’t talk to him after this practice, but he did everything,” Reid said of Smith. “And he’s looked good the last few days, and I think he feels good.”
Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, L’Jarius Sneed, and Drue Tranquill didn’t play in preseason Week 2. The Chiefs could have as many as 14 players sit for the upcoming preseason Week 3 game against Seattle.
