Alabama Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer used his first SEC teleconference call of the 2026 season to shed light on a wide receiver battle that has been brewing since fall camp. The verdict: Rico Scott will be the Crimson Tide’s No. 3 wide receiver heading into Saturday’s opener against ECU.

DeBoer said Derek Meadows will also factor into the rotation, and don’t be surprised if Cederian Morgan rounds out what could be a tremendous top-five unit at the position. Starting with Ryan Coleman-Williams and Lotzier Brooks at the top, followed by Scott, Meadows, and Morgan, Alabama has the kind of receiver depth that should allow it to go five deep throughout the season.

Rico Scott earned the role

Scott had a strong fall camp in 2025 by all accounts, and he followed that up with another impressive showing this year. He went out and won the job, and it will be exciting to see what he looks like for the Crimson Tide in a more pronounced role.

But catching passes won’t be Scott’s only responsibility. DeBoer also discussed the return units and confirmed that Scott, Coleman-Williams, Trae’shawn Brown, and Dijon Lee will all handle punt and kick return duties for Alabama.

Dijon Lee as a returner is a fascinating wrinkle

The thought of Dijon Lee at 6-foot-4 fielding punts and kicks is something else entirely. Imagine being on the coverage unit and having to bring down all 6-foot-4 of him in the open field. That can’t be a fun assignment for opposing special teams players, and it speaks to the versatility and athleticism DeBoer wants to deploy across his roster.

What it means for Week 1

Alabama’s receiver room looks loaded heading into the season opener against ECU. DeBoer tends to reveal quite a bit during these weekly calls, and the first one of 2026 delivered. Between the receiver pecking order and the return game details, the Crimson Tide have a clear plan for how they want to use their skill players from the jump.
