The Cal Golden Bears facing off against the UCLA Bruins Saturday brings a great blend of returning talent, new coaches, and so many different variables that make picking a winner feel like a genuine coin flip.

And frankly, even if I get this one wrong, I’m just happy this game kicks off at 9:30 with those Pac-12 after dark vibes. This might be one of the best games on the entire Week 1 college football schedule, even without a ranking next to either team’s name.

Cal’s quarterback is the real deal

If you’re a casual college football fan, let me introduce you to Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, the quarterback out of Cal. JKS was the best true freshman quarterback in the entire country last year.

He is an absolute lightning rod who can make every single throw on the football field. Now pair that with a brand new weapon in wide receiver Ian Strong from Rutgers, who is really good, a very good running back from Washington in Adam Muhammad, who is going to be dynamic and explosive. Cal’s offense has the pieces to put up points in a hurry.

But Cal is also breaking in a new head coach in Tosh Lupoi, the former defensive coordinator from Oregon. I love what he could become as a head coach, but that’s the variable here. New system, new voice, new everything on the sideline. That matters in Week 1.

Bob Chesney brings stability UCLA has been desperate for

Now flip the coin to UCLA, where Nico Iamaleava is the new starting quarterback. You may recognize him from Tennessee as the former 5-star, and he had an okay year last year, really took some strides in moments.

The biggest thing working in his favor is the most stable coaching situation he’s had since Tennessee. Bob Chesney, the hire from James Madison, who I still think was the most underrated coaching hire this entire cycle, gives this program a foundation it hasn’t had in a long time.

Chesney also brought in Wayne Knight, the running back from James Madison. I think he’s incredibly dynamic, and I think he’s going to be the star of this offense. They’re going to use Nico’s legs in a completely different way than what we saw in previous years, and he still has the upside to make a ton of plays through his arm. That combination of a dual-threat quarterback and a proven running back gives UCLA an identity it can lean on when things get tight.

A coin flip that comes down to coaching and experience

And you may say, Tegan, if it’s a coin flip, how are you picking a side? Here’s my answer: I’m trusting the more experienced head football coach in Bob Chesney with a more experienced quarterback, and I think their rushing attack is going to make enough plays for them to win this football game.

I could see a shootout where both quarterbacks go absolutely crazy, or I could see a gross, ugly matchup because both defenses have a ton of talent. Give me the stability on UCLA’s sideline and a ground game that can control the clock. I’m taking the Bruins in what should be one of the best games on the entire Week 1 slate.
