Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables had the perfect thing to say after beating UTEP that should give fans much-needed relief
The Oklahoma Sooners beat UTEP 51-0, and they still walked away from the game in good shape “health-wise.”
Coming into the Oklahoma Sooners‘ first game of the season, there was a bit of worry. No, no one thought this team would lose to UTEP. They just won 51-0, so that was never a concern. The concern was that injuries would continue to pile up or at least affect the Sooners.
There were quite a few leading up to the game, but they walked away in a good spot.
“We are in a really good position health-wise. We played seven guys a bunch of snaps… he’s (Fasusi) great,” Venables said when asked about why Michael Fasusi didn’t play much.
It was important that Venables answered that way. Coming into the season, the last few weeks saw some important players deal with injuries. Just a week or so ago, Jake Maikkula was injured. Then, Ryan Fodje was injured. That’s the starting center and then a guy who has started games at both right tackle and guard. So, of course, when we all saw star left tackle Michael Fasusi go to the sideline and not return after starting the game, everyone worried.
But Venables mentioned that Fasusi was fine. He said Fasusi’s day was cut short for a reason other than health. He’s fine, and that’s what matters most. Fasusi was at one point battling a shoulder injury during camp, but has been practicing for two weeks. However, one other key player was in street clothes on the sideline.

The biggest surprise as the game kicked off was undoubtedly that Okoye did not dress for the Sooners. He stayed on the sideline the entire night. According to SoonerScoop, Okoye could be dealing with an oblique injury. After the game, Venables was asked about Okoye.
“He’ll be OK. He’s alright. We just decided to hold him,” Venables told reporters.
They will likely need all hands on deck next week, as they travel to play the Michigan Wolverines.
