Notre Dame 2027 quarterback commit Champ Monds IV delivered difficult news this week, announcing that his 2026 senior season at Vero Beach is officially over. The talented Florida signal caller is dealing with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder that requires a minor procedure.

On Instagram, Monds made the official announcement:

“Vero Nation1 First of all I’d like to thank my coaches, teammates, supporters, and the fans and the fan base for the past 3 years as it’s been a blessing to play here. Unfortunately, that run has ended as my 2026 season has been cut short to an unexpected minor procedure that needs to be addressed. I know that all my guys at Vero will finish the drill without me! Even with how disappointing this is for me, I’m excited about a new start, 100% healthy in South Bend! Irish fans see you soon!”

It’s a real shame, because Monds was putting together a tremendous senior season.

In the first two games, he completed 33 of 40 passes for 591 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions, completing 83% of his passes. The 6-foot-2, 224-pound signal caller also added another four scores on the ground. The early returns suggested a breakout campaign was well underway.

Monds’ recruiting background

Monds was originally a part of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying to the 2027 class. Before that reclassification, he was considered by many to be the No. 1 overall quarterback in the 2028 class.

Due to injuries over the last two years, his recruiting rankings sit a bit lower than they probably would otherwise. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Monds is rated as the No. 255 overall player, the No. 21 quarterback, and the No. 27 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 class.

His offer list tells a much more specific story for just how talented of a player Monds really is.

The Fighting Irish were able to beat out the likes of Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Miami, NC State, UNC, Oklahoma State, Pitt, Purdue, South Carolina, Syracuse, UCF, UCLA, West Virginia, Northwestern, Wake Forest, and SMU, among several others. The demand for Monds was extremely high, making him a tremendous addition to Notre Dame’s 2027 class.

What this means for Notre Dame

Many around South Bend on head coach Marcus Freeman’s staff are extremely high on the future for Monds. He plans on enrolling early, so in theory he will be in South Bend officially in January.

Over the last two years, Monds has only been able to play in a handful of games due to a couple of these injuries, which makes him a bit of a projection on the college level. The talent, however, is legitimate and tantalizing.

The most unfortunate part of this situation is that the senior season he was putting together was probably going to lead to a massive rise from a recruiting rankings perspective. Without new film and information, his rankings will probably stagnate. That won’t matter to Notre Dame fans in the end, especially if he returns to the form we were seeing during his senior season at Vero Beach.

There’s a chance Monds could be the next quarterback in line after CJ Carr heads to the NFL. This is a momentary setback for what could be a great story. Monds is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country regardless of classification, and now his eyes are fully set on Notre Dame, where his next game will be in the blue and gold.
