Notre Dame QB commit Champ Monds already proving doubters wrong with dominant senior season start
Notre Dame football has another special quarterback coming in 2027 commit Champ Monds. He is off to an elite senior season start.
Just as many expected, 2027 Notre Dame quarterback commit Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV is already proving the doubters wrong on the recruiting circuit.
The Vero Beach (Fla.) High School signal caller was originally a member of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying to 2027. His recruiting offers tell the full story, as Notre Dame was able to beat out the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Miami, NC State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Carolina, Syracuse, UCF, UCLA, Wake Forest, West Virginia, SMU, and Northwestern, among many others.
Despite that offer list and easy talent to see, the 6-foot-2, 224-pound passer is rated by 247Sports as just a three-star player and the No. 27 quarterback in the 2027 class. On the 247Sports Composite ranking, he currently sits as the No. 255 overall player, the No. 21 quarterback, and the No. 27 player from the state of Florida.
Why Monds has been underrated from a recruiting ranking perspective
It was understandable to a degree to see Monds somewhat underrated from a recruiting ranking perspective. Whenever someone reclassifies up a grade, it does create a bit of a dilemma with only one year of film and sample size to measure against older players.
Monds was also injured for the majority of the 2025 high school season, so his overall profile did seem incomplete. When you turn on the film, though, it is apparent how talented of a player he is.
Through two games for Vero Beach this season, Monds is already proving that Notre Dame has a top-100 player on its hands — and he might very well be a five-star quarterback and arguably the most talented signal caller of the Marcus Freeman era, even including current starter CJ Carr.
Monds’ early senior season numbers are staggering
In two games, Monds has completed 33 of 40 passes for 591 yards, seven touchdowns against no interceptions while completing 83% of his passes and running for another four scores. With a huge frame, an incredibly strong arm, and rushing ability, there is not a lot that Monds can’t do on the football field.
If the early returns in the 2026 season are any indication, Monds should see a significant recruiting ranking jump as his senior season progresses. Folks around South Bend are incredibly high on the upside that Monds brings to the table.
Where Monds fits in Notre Dame’s quarterback future
Notre Dame saw a pair of freshmen enroll this year, including Teddy Jarrard and Noah Grubbs, and it appears the program is incredibly high on Jarrard especially. While Monds will be just a freshman when he enrolls before the 2027 season, don’t count him out as the successor following the Carr era.
If Carr does decide to enter the 2027 NFL Draft, there could be an intense quarterback battle that ensues next offseason. Luckily for Monds, the plan as of now is for him to enroll early next spring. Having the opportunity to go through a full offseason would be huge for the talented signal caller.
For now, enjoy his senior season. It’s off to a great start and promises to be his best by a long shot, showcasing the five-star talent and upside that everyone knows he has.
