Oklahoma Sooners OC Ben Arbuckle just had the coldest one-liner to help prop up one of his players for a trophy at the end of the year
The Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best playmakers in the country in Isaiah Sategna, and Ben Arbuckle knows it.
The Oklahoma Sooners‘ offense may have finally gotten rid of the sour taste in the fans’ mouths from last year. It’s important we take everything with a grain of salt, because it is Week 1. And it was against UTEP. But the offense was so much better.
John Mateer was better. He looked more comfortable and layered his throws very well. The run game improved a lot, too. But one thing stayed the same from last year to this year: Isaiah Sategna is still a bad man. In fact, he’s one of the very best playmakers in the entire world. But what’s new?
“Shoot. Zay gone be Zay (Isaiah Sategna). He’s a great ball player,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle told reporters after the game. “He did some incredible things today. I don’t think I’ve ever run that fast on a punt return. I was chopping it down the sideline.”
Sategna had a punt return for a touchdown that went 88 yards. He had a reception for a touchdown on a nice pass from Mateer. Sategna had 220 all-purpose yards, with 114 yards on special teams. He’s a playmaker, and he’s going to show that more throughout the year. And he’s already shown something he didn’t get to do often last season.

Because the offense was so bad last year, the Sooners had to manufacture touches for Sategna a lot. They would do sweeps, bubble screens, and slants more than anything. Of course, there’s the occasional go-ball. However, Sategna didn’t get to showcase his route running too often last year. In this game, he did. On the touchdown he caught, he won with his feet and his hips. It was a deep post, and he shook his man to get wide open. Then, Mateer layered the throw to him perfectly.
This is huge, too, because Satgena wants to do that more. He said this offseason he didn’t want to be known as a guy who just scores on screen or slants. He wants to go down the field and win with his feet and hips. He did just that. Sure, it was UTEP, so take everything with a grain of salt. However, it’s hard not to think this guy has what it takes to be a potential Day 1 NFL Draft pick.
