The Oklahoma Sooners just found out that the Michigan Wolverines may not be as good as their ranking may indicate.
The Oklahoma Sooners took a massive win on Saturday night, while they watched the college football slate for Week 1 from the comfort of their own beds. They played on Friday night. And in that game vs. UTEP, they showed that they could be a National Championship contender.
OU beat the Miners 51-0. Meanwhile, the team they looked to next, the Michigan Wolverines, were struggling. Star quarterback Bryce Underwood looked bad in the first half. With an interception that should have been a pick-six just before the half, things weren’t looking good. He had another interception in the first half that was called back. The Wolverines, ranked No. 16 in the country, were only up 7-6 on Western Michigan in the first half.
One of the greatest football schools ever, with new head coach Kyle Whittingham, didn’t look so great. Oklahoma is set to travel I Ann Arbor next week, to play Michigan on the road. That game felt like it could give OU some trouble. Now, the Wolverines can’t even blow out a MAC team at home. Maybe this is a big-time win for the Sooners. Or maybe it’s not?
How Michigan’s struggle against Western Michigan could hurt the Sooners
At the end of the year, the College Football Playoff committee looks at everything. They look at every team you played and what they were before, after, and while you played them. Coming into this season, OU was known to have the second-hardest schedule, and this Week 2 road game was a big reason why.
So, right now, Michigan is ranked No. 16. As the No. 10 team in college football, a road win vs. No. 16 looks very good. But if Michigan is struggling like this, they could fall massively. Then, if they fall and OU beats them and even obliterates them, the Sooners will have less of a case for the playoff at the end of the year. That’s just how it is now. And that could hurt them. Then again, at the end of the day, if you win all your games, you don’t really have to worry about making a case for the playoff.
