LSU pretty much played a perfect game against Clemson on Saturday night in Baton Rouge.

There isn’t much to nitpick about the 51-10 beatdown of Clemson, but there was one thing that LSU’s players and coaches weren’t happy about.

Clemson scored its only touchdown late in the fourth quarter when LSU’s starters were out of the game.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin made it clear after the game that allowing Clemson to score was not okay.

“I told them, ‘Hey, the backups on defense did not perform to our standard,’” said Kiffin. “They let them go down and score and we turned the ball over early to give them the three points. There’s going to come games that those guys got to go into games and they’re going to have to stop them.”

LSU EDGE Jordan Ross, a Tennessee transfer who had the best game of his college career, echoed those sentiments after the game.

“We weren’t really too happy with that honestly,” said Ross. “We tried to shut them out, but unfortunately we didn’t. That was the only problem. But next time, we’ll do better.”

Ross added that he thinks LSU’s defense is “just getting started.”

It’s clear that this LSU team has high standards. And fans are understandably excited about the way LSU’s players are responding to the blowout win over Clemson. The players are confident, but they understand that it’s just one game and it doesn’t guarantee anything moving forward.

That kind of competitive mindset could certainly lead to a special season for LSU, but there’s a long way to go.
