NFL insider Albert Breer reveals his biggest worry of the Christian Gonzalez saga for one of the parties involved.
It’s hard to believe that the New England Patriots and CB Christian Gonzalez still have not agreed to terms on a deal. Gonzalez has been a sensational talent over the past few season. The Patriots have sky high expectations for 2026 (and beyond). This feels like a no-brainer.
Yet, it’s not. And NFL insider Albert Breer, during a recent radio appearance, was asked about the negotiation through the angle of team ownership. His answer revealed Breer’s biggest worry about this saga.

“The thing I worry about with the Krafts, because I think the third rail thing for them is being called cheap. And that is why Robert Kraft came out and said what he did. I don’t think he intended to poison the negotiation when he did that. I think it was just sensitive to like, the narrative out there. So you want to let people know like ‘hey, we’re doing our best here.’
Unfortunately, that sort of thing inadvertently painted Gonzalez as greedy, and I don’t think he meant to do it. But I think it’s what happens when you talk that way in these sorts of situations, especially when the other side is keeping their mouth shut about it. And you can see where that would piss them off. So I don’t think it’s being cheap. I think it’s sometimes this obsession with ‘winning the deal’. With doing ‘good business’.”

Here’s the thing about how this has played out with the Krafts. The numbers are one thing. And “winning” there means retaining more of the core of the roster long-term. But the Patriots play on WEDNESDAY. Christian Gonzalez hasn’t revealed whether or not he’s playing in the season-opening game. Against the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Instead, he is “focused on today”.
That, in and of itself, is not good business. So if Albert Breer is right and the Patriots are worried about “winning the deal” in the name of good business, they should think twice. Because this holdout stopped being “good business” several weeks ago. And it’s only getting worse.
