The majority of the Week 1 college football slate is complete (outside of Monday night’s game between SMU and Florida State) and what a thrilling weekend of college football it was. Of course there were plenty of blowouts to go around, but we learned a lot about some of the perceived top teams in the country after this week.

So, who is the biggest winner and loser of Week 1? Let’s break it down.

LSU’s talent is undeniable after dominating Clemson

As much as people hate on LSU, myself included, I have to call a spade a spade here. This team is legit. It’s one of the most talented teams in the entire country, and their Week 1 performance proved it. I still can’t figure out if Clemson is that bad or LSU is that good, but what I saw was a roster that looked head and shoulders above their competition.

And as frustrating as Lane Kiffin can be, the man is just funny. He’s a guy that everyone hates, but you have to admit he’s a little bit funny. That quote Kiffin had about “imagine if we had pro players” is so funny. Say what you want about Kiffin’s antics, but the results are backing up the personality right now.

I also have to admit something that’s going to pain some fanbases to hear. LSU, watching them come out of that tunnel, they have the best aura in all of college football. I’m not even going to sugarcoat that.

Michigan is Week 1’s biggest loser, and yet they won

Now here’s where it gets uncomfortable. The biggest loser of Week 1 is a team that actually won its football game. Michigan. Easily the biggest loser, and I’m not even talking about the final score, because that’s beside the point.

I’m looking at the broader aspect of Michigan football. A Kyle Whittingham-led team with a 5-star quarterback in Bryce Underwood, a signal-caller who was perfectly curated for this offense, looked egregious. Looked terrible. All of a sudden, everything said about Michigan going into the season is being questioned. The offensive line, the development of Underwood, the defense getting pushed around and mauled. That was brutal.

You begin to wonder: did Michigan just spend their entire time focusing on Oklahoma and look past Western Michigan? And you may say, every team has a bad game early in the season. Sure. But not to that scale. You can overlook a team, but what we saw went far beyond a slow start. The Wolverines were outmatched, and frankly, Western Michigan deserved that game by far.

This is the biggest loser of Week 1, even with Michigan walking away with a win. And if that doesn’t tell you something about the state of that program right now, I don’t know what will.
