Lane Kiffin’s leaked halftime speech revealed something LSU fans should be paying close attention to
Lane Kiffin’s halftime speech during LSU’s win over Clemson was leaked on Monday.
If you’re an LSU fan, you’ve almost certainly seen the leaked video of Lane Kiffin’s halftime speech from the blowout win over Clemson in Week 1.
There’s a lot of mixed feelings on the leaked video – from how it was leaked (stuff that happens in locker rooms should usually stay in locker rooms) to what Kiffin actually said – but those opinions aside, I think we learned something important about Kiffin from this video.
We all know Kiffin is a great offensive mind. We know he built a great culture at Ole Miss. And we know he can win. But I think what gets lost with fans sometimes is that winning doesn’t just happen because you’re Lane Kiffin, Kirby Smart, Nick Saban, or any of these great coaches. You’re not guaranteed anything once the game starts. You have to go out and earn it.
Performing well on Saturdays is the result of great preparation, countless hours of practice, weightlifting, watching film, and building team chemistry. But none of that means anything if you don’t go out and execute on Saturdays.
The head coach has a lot of responsibilities on game day, but I think the most important thing any head coach can do is motivate his team and keep them locked in. Some may think that’s overrated, but I don’t think that’s the case at all. I think it’s the most important thing on game days – because to reach the levels of success of the Sabans and the Smarts, you have to have a team that competes every single rep. No matter what the scoreboard says. No matter what happened on the previous play, good or bad.
Winning a championship happens because a talented team comes out and does their job, never gives up on a play, and competes to the best of their ability every rep.
Lane Kiffin showed he belongs in that elite coaching conversation
I think what we saw in that video with Kiffin is a man who knows how to motivate his team. It’s no coincidence that we’ve also seen similar videos from Kirby Smart’s halftime speeches and Nick Saban’s pregame speeches. That stuff matters. It matters a lot.
And it’s not just the rah-rah or the yelling. It’s finding whatever your team reacts to, tapping into it, and sending that message to get them locked in for the full 60 minutes. They’re not going to win every play – the other team is going to make plays too. But if a coach can get his players to stay true to who they are, trust their preparation, and compete on every rep, that’s the team that usually ends up winning.
I think we learned that Kiffin is capable of getting that out of his team. And that should make LSU fans feel really confident about Kiffin moving forward.
