Josh Heupel shared a cool moment with his true freshman quarterback on Saturday in Tennessee’s win against Georgia Tech.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel did something during the Vols’ win against Georgia Tech that may have gone unnoticed by some, but I think it’s an important thing to point out.
At one point during the third quarter, when the Vols’ offense was stalling a bit, Tennessee was forced to call timeout before an important third down.
As the team went to the sideline, Heupel grabbed true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon — who appeared to be frustrated that he didn’t get the play called in time and the team had to use a timeout — and said, “Hey, you’re good.”
It was a cool moment between a young quarterback who is still growing and a head coach who is helping him grow.
Brandon picked up an important first down with his legs via a seven-yard run after that moment with Heupel.
Coaching isn’t just yelling at officials (or players) or calling plays, it’s stuff like this. It’s building confidence in your players, which allows them to go play free.
Brandon has a high ceiling. He’s just scratching the surface of who he can be. And having a coach who has your back while you’re in the fight is absolutely going to help him reach that ceiling.
