Deshaun Watson’s comment after losing his first start in nearly two years isn’t going to go over well with Cleveland Browns fans.
The Cleveland Browns opened the 2025 NFL season with a 34-10 blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and quarterback Deshaun Watson did little to inspire confidence in his return from a torn Achilles tendon in 2024.
Watson’s postgame comments about his first-quarter interception only added fuel to a frustrated fan base searching for reasons to believe in the Browns’ direction at quarterback.
For a brief stretch on their opening offensive drive, Cleveland looked capable of moving the football. The Browns elected to receive and pushed downfield with some efficiency.
That momentum evaporated when Watson threw an interception, one of two turnovers on the day for the Browns. Rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion added a fumble to the mix, and Jacksonville took control from there.

After the game, Watson addressed the first-quarter pick with a response that lacked the accountability that would have been more acceptable.
“Nah, bad plays are going to happen all the time. Look all around the league,” Watson stated. “Everyone throws interceptions, everyone makes bad plays. You got to give defense credit; he made a good play on that.”
The “bad plays are going to happen all the time” portion of that comment is a tough one to swallow from a starting quarterback who has given Cleveland very little reason for excitement since arriving in 2022. Watson has never played more than seven games in a single season with the Browns, and the franchise remains in search of its long-term answer at quarterback.
Taking accountability for the interception after a 24-point loss could have been simple. Watson chose the opposite route, and it has gotten rather old at this point.
Watson finished the day 16-of-22 for 205 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. The touchdown came on a 46-yard reception by rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston late in the fourth quarter against Jaguars backups. It was a garbage-time score that gave Cleveland its first touchdown of the season but did nothing to change the outcome.
Watson added six rushes for 38 yards, though the ground game as a whole was nonexistent. Jacksonville shut down the run with relative ease, largely because the Jaguars don’t have to respect what Watson brings as a passer right now.
This was Watson’s first game in nearly two years since tearing his Achilles in 2024, and his performance did nothing to quiet the doubt surrounding his future in the NFL.
The loss, the turnovers, and the postgame deflection all paint the same picture Cleveland fans have seen for four seasons. The Browns need more from their quarterback, and Watson’s words after this one suggest he doesn’t fully grasp that reality.
