Notre Dame football is off to a 2-0 start, and head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish now head into next weekend with a home opportunity to take on the Michigan State Spartans.

On paper, this should be another decisive victory for a Notre Dame team considered a top-3 program in college football right now and a legitimate national title contender. Michigan State, now led by former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald, is rebuilding from the foundation.

On top of what should be an impressive game for the Fighting Irish, Notre Dame also has several top 2028 recruiting targets set to visit South Bend this weekend. Here are the players expected on campus and where things currently stand for the Fighting Irish recruiting efforts.

LB Jameer Miles – Mundelein (Ill.) Carmel Catholic

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound defender is currently rated as a four-star, the No. 52 overall player, No. 3 linebacker, and the No. 5 player from the state of Illinois on the 247 Sports Composite rankings. Miles is a fast and explosive defender who plays a lot of safety currently in high school but projects best to the second level. As he continues to add size and strength, he should end up being a dynamite linebacker at the next level.

Notre Dame has prioritized Miles early, especially with the proximity to home and the overall talent he brings to the field.

He is also the teammate of offensive tackle Wyatt VanBoening, who has recently been predicted to land with the Fighting Irish. There is a chance VanBoening might make another trip to South Bend this weekend, although that has not been fully verified yet.

If he does, things will most likely continue to trend in a great direction with the 6-foot-7, 285-pound offensive tackle. VanBoening is currently rated as the No. 80 overall player, the No. 11 offensive tackle, and the No. 7 player from the state of Illinois on the 247 Sports Composite ranking. Offensive line coach Joe Rudolph has taken a high liking to him early on, and Notre Dame appears to be in a strong spot if they push the right buttons down the stretch.

I expect VanBoening to eventually be in the class for Notre Dame.

DT RJ Wyms – The Woodlands (Texas) College Park

Wyms is the son of former NFL defensive lineman Ellis Wyms, who attended Mississippi State. RJ Wyms is currently rated as a four-star player, the No. 57 overall player, the No. 6 defensive lineman, and the No. 5 player from the state of Texas for the 2028 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. While he’s a smaller interior defensive lineman at 6-foot-1 and 255 pounds, he still has tremendous playmaking potential as an interior penetrator.

Notre Dame has done a good job with Wyms early on, and this weekend offers a great opportunity to get him on campus. His game is eerily similar to current Notre Dame standout Francis Brewu, a player defensive line coach Charlie Partridge has gravitated towards. Selling that fit in the Notre Dame defense could be huge, especially with Wyms seeing a player like Brewu move in person.

EDGE Cam Toomey – Saratoga Springs (NY) High School

Toomey is rated as the No. 47 overall player and the No. 9 edge in the 2028 class according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. He’s been pursued by schools from across the country, so getting him on campus is a big deal for the Fighting Irish. We will see how much they move the needle with him this weekend.

CB Langston Pidgeon – Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic

Pidgeon is currently rated as the No. 89 overall player in the class. Like Toomey, he’s a highly ranked recruit who has been drawing interest from programs nationwide. Notre Dame will have an opportunity to make a strong impression.

RB Xander Edwards – Jacksonville (Fla.) The Bolles School

Edwards is a Notre Dame legacy. His father Marc Edwards was a star fullback for the Fighting Irish in the 1990s. The younger Edwards is rated as a four-star, the No. 113 overall player, the No. 7 running back, and the No. 15 player from the state of Florida according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. Edwards is a player Notre Dame did not pursue early on, which allowed schools like Miami and Florida to make a huge impact. The Irish have been doing a better job recently, however, so it will be worth watching how hard they push for him going into the season.

Other notable visitors

Notre Dame will also be hosting Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard linebacker Ryan Drakford, currently rated as the No. 319 overall player in the composite ranking and a four-star. Anaheim (Calif.) Servite linebacker Allen Kennett V will also be on campus. He is rated as a four-star player and the No. 201 overall prospect in the 2028 class. Buford (Ga.) High School defensive end Luke Nabors also makes the trip. He is rated as a four-star and the No. 295 overall player in the 2028 class.

Jack McNamara is a player to keep a close eye on. The 2028 Chicago (Ill.) Brother Rice tight end stands at 6-foot-5, 235 pounds and is only rated as a three-star, but that hasn’t stopped Notre Dame from pursuing the talented player. He’s considered an early favorite of the staff.

The last player to keep a close eye on is Thomasville (Ga.) Thomas County running back Jordan McNeil. He’s also rated as a three-star player in the 2028 recruiting class, but Notre Dame seems to have a high opinion of McNeil so far.

2029 and 2030 targets on campus

As if the 2028 class wasn’t enough, Notre Dame will also be hosting elite Franklin, Tennessee, Battleground Academy wide receiver Maddox Porter from the 2029 class. Porter is expected to be a borderline five-star recruit in that class, so getting him on campus is a big deal.

Notre Dame will also welcome 2030 Chicago, Illinois, Brother Rice quarterback Sam Holcomb. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound signal-caller is already starting as a freshman and is incredibly talented with a huge arm. He’s demanding attention from several big programs, and Notre Dame is included. This will be a loaded weekend in South Bend.
