People are getting the wrong idea about why Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel used a trick play against Kennesaw State
The Tennessee Vols used a trick play to convert a two-point conversion try against Kennesaw State.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel did something against Kennesaw State that he doesn’t usually d0 — he used a trick play.
In the first quarter, after a Braylon Staley receiving touchdown, Heupel used the “swinging gate” formation to convert a two-point conversion attempt.
The play came just a few snaps after a Kennesaw State player took a cheap shot at Staley.
Some folks immediately speculated that Heupel was sending a message by going for two.
But I don’t believe that was the case. Heupel said after the game that Tennessee went for two based on the look they got from Kennesaw State’s defense on that play.
The Vols have been using that formation over the first couple of games of the season before eventually lining up for the PAT attempt. This was the first time they got the look they wanted and went for two.
I think this is just Heupel putting something on teape that future opponents have to prepare for. I definitely don’t think he was “sending a message” to Kennesaw State head coach Jerry Mack.
Mack is a former Vols assistant that Heupel has a lot of respect for (sometimes players go rogue and make poor decisions).
