Bears teammates show support for Caleb Williams after Week 2 injury and back Tyson Bagent with uncertainty setting in
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a hamstring injury during the Week 2 loss and will undergo further imaging on Monday to determine the severity.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and everyone in Chicago is now playing the waiting game until we learn more about the full extent of the injury.
Williams was in good spirits in the locker room after the game before walking out on his own without any assistance of any kind. The team’s young star will undergo further testing on Monday to determine the severity of the injury.
It’s not a situation any team wants to deal with for any player at any position, especially when it involves your young franchise quarterback.
“I’m worried,” rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad II said after the game in the locker room. “If 18 gets hurt, I’m worried. I think the whole stadium was worried, maybe the whole world. But, he should be good. I asked him after the game and he said he’s going to be good.”
“It hurts, man,” wide receiver Luther Burden III added. “He’s the heart, soul, and engine of this team. Hopefully he’s okay and gets back out there.”
Even though the situation is still a concern and uncertain until tomorrow, the Bears will need to turn the page with or without Williams, something the team wasn’t able to do in this game.
Bears believe in Tyson Bagent despite how the game ended on Sunday
After Williams went down, the Bears were still within range of scoring points in a 3-6 game. Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent entered the game and couldn’t get the offense into the endzone, and the eventual field goal attempt was blocked. Bagent and the Bears got the ball back with roughly a minute to play down 3-9 in need of a touchdown.
Bagent led the offense down the field with two strong completions, but again couldn’t finish the drive and get the offense into the endzone after being sacked on the final play.
“Last play, yeah it got kind of hairy for me,” Bagent admitted. “But, unacceptable on my end. Can’t take a sack on the last play of the game. Gotta at least give somebody a chance.”
If Williams is in fact forced to miss any extended time, the team will turn to Bagent as the new starter. Despite how things went on those final plays, the Bears have full confidence in Bagent running this offense, a player head coach Ben Johnson claimed was one of the best 32 quarterbacks in this league earlier this year.
“Man, Tyson is as ready as it gets,” wide receiver Rome Odunze said. “He’s the type where he’s ready each and every week for his opportunity to go out there and shine. We’re going to support him, get him as ready as fast as we can get with one another and getting that chemistry down as much as we can for the games that he’s going to be back there.”
It could be one game, 15 games, or even zero games that Bagent starts for the Bears this season. It’s still unknown and fully dependent on Monday’s test results. But either way, the support is fully there in Bagent’s ability to lead this offense.
“That guy works his tail off,” wide receiver Kalif Raymond said. “No matter what’s going on, I know he’s going to be prepared. We don’t know everything, I’m not a doctor. But tonight we’re going to go watch the film and we’ll know more tomorrow.”
For Bears fans, it’s going to be hard to sleep well tonight after what happened today. But, you can at least find some comfort in how the players and coaches feel about your QB2 until we learn more about QB1’s status.
