Florida HC Jon Sumrall’s own words could lead to a massive change for the Gators heading into Saturday vs. Texas Longhorns
Jon Sumrall’s words from spring practice could come to fruition, as the Gators look to try and get out of their funk.
Through four games, there was a lot of talk about the Florida Gators potentially being contenders for the national championship. They were averaging 53.5 points per game and crushing opposing defenses thanks to a great running game led by Jadan Baugh.
Unfortunately, things have stalled out in a big way. They have scored just 36 points over the last two games, and got blown out by both the Missouri Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks. The offense as a whole was rough from the top down, and it leads to some interesting questions.
Jon Sumrall’s own words could prompt a quarterback change
When the Gators went through their quarterback battle with Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr., head coach Jon Sumrall was very non-committal to who would be the guy. He wanted to foster a true competition, and that would continue throughout the season. Why would he do that? Simple: continue to work on fielding the best team possible.
When Sumrall was asked about the quarterback competition in the heart of spring practice on March 24th, he made it clear that, just because you are named the starter, doesn’t mean it will stay that way.
“We got a long way to go to identify who’s going to be the trigger man that gets the opportunity to start game one. You start game one, and it doesn’t mean you’re starting game two or three or four, or you got to play well if you even if you get to nod for game one and so on. But I think we’re seeing certain things out of all the guys in that room,” said Sumrall.
Would Sumrall make a move? It’s certainly a non-zero proposition for the Gators. The offensive line is playing very poor football, and Philo is running for his life. Unlike Jones, Philo isn’t the most fleet of foot and is struggling to create with a lot of pressure.
This isn’t to say that it’s all on Philo that the offense isn’t clicking, but he’s certainly not the solution right now. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Sumrall make a change to try and jumpstart an offense that could use one. Jones has a live arm and the athleticism to create outside of structure, something the Gators’ offense could use right now.
Will a change be made? Probably not, but don’t discount it.
