Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has done a fantastic job recruiting since arriving in Gainesville, and the 2027 class keeps proving it.

He already has one five-star commitment in offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller. Over the last six months, Sumrall has also pushed to flip two more five-star recruits: No. 1 overall prospect Jalen Brewster and wide receiver Easton Royal. Now the push for Royal appears to be working.

Rivals now predicting Easton Royal to flip to the Florida Gators

On Saturday, the Gators are hosting Royal at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, better known as The Swamp. It’s his second game there this season. Ahead of that visit, Steve Wiltfong of Rivals is predicting Royal to flip from the Texas Longhorns to Florida.

That’s a significant development for the nation’s No. 3 ranked prospect per Rivals. Royal had been trending toward LSU for some time, and keeping him away from Lane Kiffin and the Tigers would be a huge coup for Sumrall. It would set the stage for what this recruiting group can do in Gainesville and elevate things to an entirely different level.
It also speaks volumes about the game-day atmosphere on campus. A prospect trending toward an SEC rival doesn’t usually change course without a reason. Did the Ole Miss and South Carolina games make that much of a difference for Royal? Considering how the momentum has changed, it’s pretty likely that’s the case.

Landing Royal would also give Florida a strong pitch for other elite targets, especially with the 2028 class. A pair of five-star commitments in Sumrall’s first full class sends a clear message about where the program is heading.

Easton Royal would boost an already talented wide receiver room

The Percy Harvin comparison from Rivals isn’t a throwaway. Royal’s ability to create explosive plays on offense is eerily similar to Harvin’s, which is why they landed on that comp. Harvin remains one of the most dynamic weapons in program history, so it’s a lofty standard for any recruit.

Florida already has Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III in its wide receiver room. Adding Royal would immediately boost that group. He could theoretically replace Eric Singleton Jr. in the starting lineup next season and give the Gators a level of explosiveness that would rival any SEC team.

That type of impact is why this recruitment matters so much. Explosive playmakers change how defenses have to play, and Royal profiles as a receiver who could earn a major role early in his career.

Saturday’s visit is the next step. If Sumrall can seal the deal and complete the flip, it would be one of the biggest wins of his tenure on the recruiting trail. This will be worth monitoring closely as the 2027 class continues to take shape, and they build out the class of 2028.
