Florida Gators could see a major change on Saturday vs. Texas Longhorns due to factors out of their control, and it could be a massive benefit

Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall talked about how the starting quarterback isn’t set in stone before, but he didn’t see this coming.

The Florida Gators may be seeing a change at quarterback this week against the Texas Longhorns, and it’s not an ideal scenario. Starting quarterback Aaron Philo‘s status is in question heading into Saturday’s game due to an undisclosed injury.

It’s a tough one for the Gators, as Philo’s been solid over the first six games of the season. It would be tough to miss him if he doesn’t end up playing, but it’s also something that head coach Jon Sumrall hinted at.

Aaron Philo may miss Saturday’s game vs. Texas

Back in March, Sumrall talked about the quarterback battle between Philo and Tramell Jones Jr., hinting at making a change at the position before he declared a winner.

“We got a long way to go to identify who’s going to be the trigger man that gets the opportunity to start game one. You start game one, and it doesn’t mean you’re starting game two or three or four, or you got to play well if you even if you get to nod for game one and so on. But I think we’re seeing certain things out of all the guys in that room,” said Sumrall.

Now, this wasn’t the scenario in which Sumrall mentioned this year. However, it happening is what he thought might resonate. Philo has played well, and moved the offense down the field with some consistency. However, he’s less of an elevator than he is a distributor. With how the offensive line has been playing, going to Jones might be the better option. He provides a level of athleticism and creativity that Philo doesn’t have.

Now, will Jones be enough of an elevator to get the Gators in a better spot offensively? That remains to be seen, but a change could be a smart one for the Gators, even if it’s not in the most ideal of circumstances.

We won’t find out what Philo’s status truly will be until Saturday morning, but it’s one that will be worth watching.
