A key figure in the Miami Dolphins’ reset is facing an uncertain future both with and without the franchise
The Miami Dolphins tabbed former NFL quarterback Troy Aikman to help steer their interview process this January. His future is in question in more ways than one.
The future of the Miami Dolphins is filled with blank pages.
The 2026 Dolphins sit at 0-5, are enjoying a week off from the blitz of the season, and hoping to make corrections in their hunt for a first win. But the big picture is one that offers a lot of future spending power, a young nucleus of a roster, and a leadership group that appears to be on the same page. That’s a good start. One of the men responsible for that foundation? Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman. Aikman is currently in the midst of a contract year doing color commentary for Monday Night Football — and his own future is, like Miami, filled with blank pages.
The Miami Dolphins and Troy Aikman do not have a ‘formal and ongoing agreement’ amid questions of Aikman’s future

“Aikman served as a consultant to the Dolphins last offseason but he does not have a “formal and ongoing agreement” to continue in that role for Miami, a source familiar with the arrangement tells Front Office Sports…It’s not known to what extent, if at all, Aikman continues to advise the Dolphins…but if that’s occurring, it’s not a formal arrangement, according to the source, who told FOS that Aikman’s official consulting role with the Dolphins was limited to the team’s searches that resulted in the hirings of Sullivan and Hafley this past offseason.”

I’m not sure that this is a breaking news story, as Aikman himself mentioned this spring that he does not have an official role with the franchise. Just that he would work with the team in “some” capacity ahead of the NFL Draft. Aikman has also stated that he’s invested in the product in Miami given that he had a hand in building it.
But Aikman has no “official” deal, as this report states. And by the end of this season, he’ll have no official deal for commentary, either. It will be fascinating to see where Aikman lands. Does he parlay his work with the Dolphins into a front office role elsewhere? Will he lean into more of an official role with Miami thanks to his preexisting relationships here? Or will he stiff-arm this side of the business altogether to land a new gig in the booth?
If he goes with the latter, he’ll be doing it without his long-time cohort Joe Buck. Buck got an extension from ESPN for the MNF gig. The pair has been calling games together for over two decades.
Perhaps that split is the nudge Aikman ends up using to transition out altogether. But if he does, don’t assume he’s headed to Miami. Because there’s nothing formal in place waiting for him right now — even if there are friendly faces in the building.
