Fans have a problem with the AP Top 25 after seeing where Tennessee is expected to land after beating Alabama

The Tennessee Volunteers upset the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday in Neyland Stadium.

For the second straight Saturday, the Tennessee Vols survived after a wild day of college football that saw some of the top ranked teams in the sport go down.

Tennessee was dominant in a 26-10 win over Alabama. The Vols completely shut down the Crimson Tide’s offense, and Tennessee’s offense came through in the fourth quarter and put the game away with a nine-and-a-half minute drive that ended with a DeSean Bishop touchdown.

The Vols are now 6-1 on the season. The lone blemish is a three-point loss at home to Texas, who was ranked No. 1 at the time (Texas lost to Florida on Saturday to fall to 4-2).

Tennessee’s resumé is good enough to be ranked in the top five, but the Vols aren’t expected to even sniff the top five after the win over Alabama.

CBS Sports and On3 both have Tennessee moving up to just No. 10 after the win over Alabama.

Here’s how On3 projects that the new top 10 will look when it’s released on Sunday afternoon.

  1. Miami
  2. Ohio State
  3. BYU
  4. Indiana
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Ole Miss
  7. Georgia
  8. Texas Tech
  9. Utah
  10. Tennessee

And here’s how CBS Sports sees the top 10.

  1. BYU
  2. Miami
  3. Ohio State
  4. Georgia
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Indiana
  7. Ole Miss
  8. Texas Tech
  9. UCLA
  10. Tennessee

Look, rankings don’t mean much in mid October, and I don’t think Josh Heupel cares where his team is ranked (he probably likes that the Vols are getting no respect), but what in the world is going on here?

How is Notre Dame ranked in the top five when their best win is against North Carolina? How is BYU given the benefit of the doubt when their only good win is against a Notre Dame team that has played a comically weak schedule?

Or how is Georgia ranked six spots ahead of Tennessee when the Bulldogs lost to an unranked Auburn team at home?

Again, it’s probably a good thing that Tennessee is projected to barely crack the top 10, but it also shows why fans are increasingly growing tired of the nonsense from AP Top 25 voters.
