San Francisco 49ers are getting great news at the perfect time as key playmakers are set to return from injury
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that he expects both Deebo Samuel and Christian Kirk to see the field soon. It’s perfect for a 49ers receiver room that has been decimated by injury.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan delivered two encouraging injury updates on his pass catchers after Monday night’s victory over the Commanders. Both point to the same conclusion: the timing of the 49ers bye week is excellent.
Shanahan said wide receiver Christian Kirk, who has been out with a calf injury, is a “possibility” to play in Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. He also said wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who suffered a hamstring injury in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks, is unlikely to return until after the Week 8 bye.
Why is that encouraging if they aren’t ready to play yet? Look, San Francisco has been banged up all season. A bye week that lands right in the middle of the schedule gives a lot of these guys a real chance to get healthy before the stretch run. Plus, it shows they are nearing recovery.
Christian Kirk’s timeline is a win either way
Kirk suffered his calf injury in training camp and has yet to take the field this season. He was placed on injured reserve in the preseason and had his 21-day return to practice window opened on October 15th. Now he’s a possibility to play against Atlanta, and I like that for two reasons.
First, if Kirk doesn’t play Sunday, he’ll likely suit up in Week 9 when the 49ers return from the bye against the Las Vegas Raiders. If he doesn’t get activated, he must get placed on season-ending IR and it’s highly doubtful that San Francisco will let that happen. Kirk’s return could be huge for an offense that needs bodies on the outside.
Second, if he does suit up and is active against the Falcons, he doesn’t have to carry a full workload. The 49ers can give him somewhere between 10 and 30 plays, depending on how things go. That gets one game under his belt without overloading him. Then he gets the extra time off during the bye to recover before the back half of the season.
That’s the beauty of this timing. San Francisco doesn’t have to choose between rushing Kirk back and leaving him on the shelf. Either path works.
Deebo Samuel doesn’t need to be rushed
The same logic applies to Samuel. Make no mistake, the 49ers would love to have him on the field against Atlanta. But they don’t need to force it.
By holding Samuel out this week and letting the bye do its work, San Francisco essentially gives him two more weeks to recover while he misses only one more game. Hamstrings are tricky, and the last thing this team needs is a setback that lingers into November. Patience here is the smart play, and the schedule rewards it.
Mike Evans and the Week 9 picture
Now, there is one more name to watch. Mike Evans suffered an Achilles injury in the 49ers win over the Washington Commanders on Monday night. It would appear that he won’t play Sunday against the Falcons, though it doesn’t seem to be anything serious. However, Kyle Shanahan did leave the possibility open for that to happen in his postgame press conference.
Put it all together and the outlook for the 49ers receiver room looks a whole lot better than it did a week ago. We could very well see Evans, Samuel, and Kirk all on the field together in Week 9 against the Raiders.
That would give San Francisco most of its weapons back right as the back half of the season begins. For a team that has been grinding through injuries, that’s a massive boost heading into the midseason playoff push.
Obviously, nothing is guaranteed until these guys are back on the field. But the pieces are lining up. If the 49ers can get through Sunday against Atlanta, use the bye to get healthy, and head into Week 9 with less injury struggles, this offense is going to be just fine. I’d go a step further and say it could look like the unit everyone expected heading into the season.
