Former Florida Gators star clapping back at bitter rival is a reminder of what the SEC took away from us
The Florida Gators’ rivalry with the Tennessee Volunteers has been one of the best in college football, and it’s a shame it’s on pause.
When the Florida Gators meet the Tennessee Volunteers, it’s one of the biggest games on the college football calendar. During the 1990s and 2000s, it often decided the SEC East race, and multiple times, helped determine a national champion.
Even though the Gators won a whopping 11 games in a row and 16 out of 17, a lot of them were very close games with multiple being decided by a field goal or one that was missed. At the beginning of that 11 game streak were the Urban Meyer years, as he never lost to the Volunteers.
Brandon Spikes makes it clear the Gators are better
Last season, the Volunteers stopmed the Gators out 31-11, marking their third win in four games. It’s been a tough stretch for the Gators, but things are looking forward for the Gators. What can’t be forgotten is how successful the Gators have been in this rivalry.
Former All-American linebacker Brandon Spikes was in the news on Tuesday after doing a podcast appearance, and someone decided to clap back with a picture of Spikes getting trucked by a Tennessee linebacker. He had a great response, posting the scores of all four games he faced Tennessee.
Those games were fantastic, especially that 2006 game where Tim Tebow made his presence felt with a fourth down rush to extend the game-winning drive. It’s also a firm reminder that the SEC decided to take this game away from us on an annual basis.
Instead of playing every year, the two teams will be playing every other year, which means they will play in The Swamp only every four years. That remains a travesty on many levels.
It’s also not changing anytime soon, which is a shame for everyone in college football. Well, except maybe Volunteers fans, as they were often on the losing end.
