A team-wide flu couldn’t stop this team from winning. As Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables said after the game, everyone took as many flu meds as they could on the hour-long trip to Starkville from where the team was staying before playing Mississippi State.

“We got on a bus and drove for an hour,” Venables told reporters after the game. “The guys were taking pills for the flu, and getting IVs and all those things. I’m not looking for pity or throwing a pity party, but that’s what we’ve been living through. I’m incredibly thankful for our guys’ toughness and courage.”

But that wasn’t their biggest issue. The injuries coming into this game were bad again. Many thought it would be significantly worse after the game. In a way, it is much worse. Linebacker Cole Sullivan went down with an injury. Center Jake Maikkula and defensive back Reggie Powers also went down with injuries.

Sooners have injuries they’re leaving with, but Peyton Bowen may not be one

All three are starters or starter-level players. These key players were already doing a lot more because of injuries around them. Their injuries will only make it worse. And of course, one of their best players, a top player in the country, Peyton Bowen, also came up injured.

After the game, Venables noted that Peyton Bowen should be fine.

“I think he’ll be fine,” Venables said.

After his incredible interception, Bowen returned the ball 24 yards. However, at the end of the return, the Sooners’ safety took a hard hit. He then went to the sideline and had trouble walking. He walked gingerly and didn’t look great. Of course, this concerned a lot of fans because we didn’t see him play again.

And it doesn’t help that the Sooners gave up a touchdown and a two-point conversion through the air after that, both on safety Michael Boganowski. You can’t help but feel like maybe Bowen being on the field could have changed that, but who knows. Regardless, the offense looked so much better, and the Sooners got a win.
