Despite losing to South Carolina on the road this past weekend, Tennessee is still viewed in a positive light by CBS Sports.

The national media outlet revealed their updated college football power rankings on Monday and they dropped the Vols only one spot after their loss to the Gamecocks.

Tennessee, which is ranked No. 16 in the new AP Top 25 poll, is ranked No. 12 in CBS Sports’ updated power rankings (the Vols were No. 11 last week).

The general feeling around the sport is that Tennessee was clearly the better team, but they just made too many mistakes to be on the right side of the scoreboard at the end of the game.

Tennessee was essentially a play away from sealing the game, but the botched fourth-down attempt gave the Gamecocks a chance to pull off a semi-miracle.

And unfortunately for the Vols, South Carolina took advantage.

I don’t think the result of this game changes much about how most folks feel about Tennessee. They’re still a good team with some flaws — which is true of every team in college football. But because of the result, the Vols have no room for error over the final month of the season. Tennessee almost certainly has to win out to reach the College Football Playoff.
