Jared Verse has made a mistake he had no business making ahead of Browns and Steelers in Week 8
The Cleveland Browns pass rusher could have avoided what he said, and now there’s surely Steelers players taking note of it.
The Cleveland Browns have a chance to move to 6-2 on Sunday, and it would come with a statement win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cleveland already beat Pittsburgh 27-24 at home on Thursday Night Football in Week 4, and a win in the Week 8 rematch would complete a regular-season sweep of the Steelers.
That’s something the Browns haven’t done since the 1980s. Beating the Steelers twice would also show that Cleveland is firmly in the mix for an unexpected playoff push in 2026.
Ahead of the AFC North showdown, the back-and-forth between the two teams has picked up. One Browns defender may have added a little too much fuel to the fire.
Steelers’ Cameron Heyward fired Browns to start the week
The trash talk started after the first matchup. Browns defensive end Jared Verse called the Steelers a dirty team, and that comment didn’t go unnoticed in Pittsburgh.
Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward addressed the rivalry during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show this week.
“The AFC North is on fire and I’m glad I’m in the kitchen because I like it that way,” Heyward stated. “But those are words that were said and they will be addressed.”
The veteran defensive tackle made it clear that Verse’s comments about Pittsburgh being dirty will be addressed in Sunday’s Week 8 battle. Heyward has been around the AFC North long enough to know how these games tend to go, and the Steelers will have plenty of motivation after losing the first meeting.
Jared Verse answers Heyward with a bold message
Verse didn’t stay quiet after Heyward’s comments. The Browns pass rusher answered back on Thursday, and he went further than he needed to.
“I’m not worried about Cam, I’m not worried about their O-line, I’m not worried about nobody they got on their team. We out there to go dominate, about to make Pittsburgh ours on Sunday.”
There are two ways to look at this. On one hand, you can call it confidence from Verse. He believes the Browns are going to go into Pittsburgh and get the job done again, just like they did in Week 4.
On the flip side, Verse is doing a bit too much talking. He just handed bulletin board material to a Steelers team that didn’t need any extra motivation heading into Sunday’s matchup at home.
Verse hasn’t backed up his words for Cleveland
The bigger problem is that Verse hasn’t produced at the level the Browns expected. He has been a big disappointment for Cleveland in his first season with the team, which makes this kind of talk a bad look overall.
Verse doesn’t have a single sack. He has just 12 pressures, which ranks 71st in the NFL among pass rushers, according to Pro Football Focus. For a player brought in to be a cornerstone of the pass rush, those numbers aren’t close to good enough.
The Browns sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams and got back multiple draft picks in the deal. Still, a big part of that trade was landing Verse, and so far in a Browns uniform, he just hasn’t gotten it done.
That puts even more pressure on him for Sunday. If Verse goes out there and backs up his words with a big performance, it’s a different story. A strong game against the Pittsburgh offensive line would quiet a lot of the criticism and give the Browns a major boost as they push on this year.
It won’t be easy, though. Verse is going on the road to face a motivated Pittsburgh team, and he made a comment he didn’t have to make. Now he has put a target on his back that he didn’t need heading into one of the biggest games of the season for Cleveland.
The Browns can take a big step toward an unexpected playoff spot with a win, and a sweep of the Steelers would mean a lot to the fan base. Whether Verse helps make that happen or ends up regretting his words, Sunday will be telling.
