The Wildcats are idle on Saturday, and a handful of games across the country could still work in their favor.

Kentucky Wildcats have earned a Saturday off. After a 7-1 start and a 5-1 mark in the SEC through eight games, Kentucky enters its bye week as one of the biggest surprises in college football under first-year head coach Will Stein.

The Wildcats also own one of the most impressive wins in the sport this year. They took down Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers 35-34 in overtime. It was Kentucky’s second straight overtime win after the Wildcats beat South Carolina in Columbia by the same 35-34 score the week before.

Kentucky and the Georgia Bulldogs are the only two SEC teams with one conference loss. That puts the Wildcats in an extremely rare position for the program, with a strong look late in the season at a trip to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

Kentucky is off on Saturday, but plenty can still happen to shape its SEC and College Football Playoff paths in the most favorable way possible. Here is what Kentucky fans should be rooting for over the weekend.

The Gators can help shake up the SEC even further and help Kentucky along the way

One of the biggest games for Kentucky takes place in Atlanta this weekend. The annual clash between Florida and Georgia moves to Mercedes-Benz Stadium while EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville undergoes renovations.

Georgia comes in as a 12.5-point favorite. However, Florida has already pulled off some impressive performances this year that few people gave the Gators a chance to win. That includes a blowout win over Ole Miss and a road win over Texas.

If Florida upsets Georgia, Kentucky would stand alone as the only one-loss team in the SEC. Florida also comes to Lexington in November, so the Gators being teed up as high as possible in the rankings is a resume opportunity for the Wildcats. To me, that’s the game to circle on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the conference, Auburn travels to 5-2 Ole Miss. Kentucky plays neither team, so the result doesn’t matter for strength of schedule. That makes it simple: a third loss for Ole Miss would help the Wildcats, and Kentucky fans should be rooting for Auburn.

Other two-loss teams picking up a third loss would help Kentucky as well. Texas hosts Mississippi State, and Missouri travels to Arkansas. A loss by either the Longhorns or the Tigers is unlikely, but either one would still help the cause.

Fellow playoff contenders have clashes against unranked teams

Of course, there’s a broader picture to watch too. A number of potential at-large playoff candidates face unranked teams this weekend. As this 2026 college football season has shown, anything can happen.

Indiana hosts 5-2 Minnesota. So, it should be “Go Gophers” for Kentucky fans in that one.

Cincinnati, fresh off knocking off Texas Tech, hosts undefeated Utah. That’s a big game from an at-large perspective because Utah faces BYU the following week. If Cincinnati beats Utah, both the Utes and Cougars would carry one loss into the Holy War. Thus one of those teams would pick up a second loss and fall well down the at-large picture.

That’s why Kentucky fans should be cheering for Cincinnati against Utah, as well as Arizona State when the Sun Devils travel to BYU for a Saturday afternoon clash.

USC also hosts No. 2 Ohio State. The Buckeyes have to turn to a backup quarterback with Julian Sayin out indefinitely, which makes that matchup worth watching. Kentucky fans should be saying “Go Trojans” in that one.

The Wildcats have done their part through eight games. Now they get to sit back and watch the rest of the country for a week. Not a bad place to be.
