‘His impact was profound’ — Jeffery Simmons was absolutely the difference-maker Chicago was expecting during his debut game with the Bears
Chicago Bears new defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons made his impact felt against the Seattle Seahawks in his debut game after being traded away by the Tennessee Titans.
The Jeffery Simmons effect was on full display for the Chicago Bears on Monday against the Seattle Seahawks with Simmons making his debut with his new team days after being traded away by the Tennessee Titans.
The Bears paid an absolute haul to acquire Simmons believing that he could be a game-changing presence. He absolutely was that on Monday night and honestly the Bears got a bargain despite trading two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick to get this guy.
It was a calculated risk, and yes it was only one game. But, this game proved the risk was worth the reward because Simmons was the ignitor for this entire defense.
Jeffery Simmons’ impact went well beyond his own personal stats
The push to landing Simmons wasn’t just about adding one of the top defensive players in football. That certainly was a big reason behind it, but the other reason was due to the impact that Simmons would bring to the rest of the players on this defense.
“Our guys were excited the moment they heard the news that we were bringing him on,” head coach Ben Johnson said after the game of Simmons. “He’s fit right in. We have a high character locker room and he is that himself. You can feel his presence out there – whether it’s during the play, or even after the play you can feel him talking a little smack as well. I think that elevates everybody around him.”
Simmons certainly filled up the stat sheet on Monday co-leading the team with six tackles while adding a sack, a pass deflection, and multiple pressures. He was a one-man wrecking ball on the interior and there was a clear difference when he was on the field vs. off the field. Yet, the way he opened things up for guys like Montez Sweat in that game showed the true value he will bring to this football team.
“I thought he played outstanding,” Johnson added. “He got one of the game balls. To come in there and have the share of the lead in tackles and a sack in his first game, his impact was profound.”
Jeffery Simmons reacts to his own performance in primetime
Monday night’s game was a special one for Simmons beyond his monster performance. It was also his first game under the lights in primetime since 2023.
This was one of the biggest stages of his career and he delivered in such a massive way. It’s got to be such a cool moment for him to make such an impact in this environment and do it with a winning organization.
“When I ran out of the tunnel, I just kept telling myself it’s just football,” Simmons said. “I’m going to go out there and be me. Play-by-play, be in the moment, that’s always been my goal is just to embrace the moment. That’s what happened tonight… It was a lot of emotion. I’m grateful to be here and it was a great start.”
Simmons arrived to the team facilities on Thursday night and stayed until 10 p.m. studying up on the game plan to be able to play in this game. The next day, he was back in there bright and early and started practicing with the team. Tonight, he played 48 defensive snaps at an elite level. This guy is just the ultimate pro’s pro while also being an unstoppable player on the field.
“I’m here to do my job,” Simmons added. “And help this team win football games.”
So far, he’s off to a good start with that and the Bears are more than thrilled to have a guy like him on board to transform this defense at the right time. It was a fantastic first game and now we’ll see how the Bears, and Simmons, can continue to build off this.
