The Alabama Crimson Tide landed a significant recruiting victory when 2027 wide receiver Cedric Simmons flipped his commitment from the Auburn Tigers to the Crimson Tide. The 5-10, 195-pound wideout out of Selma, Alabama, gives the Crimson Tide a boost at a position of need while delivering a blow to their in-state rival in the process.

Simmons, currently rated as a 3-star recruit, could climb the rankings before National Signing Day. Alabama has a track record of developing wide receiver talent, and adding one of the state’s best pass catchers only strengthens a 2027 class that already features some promising names.

Alabama’s 2027 wide receiver haul is taking shape

The Simmons flip is noteworthy on its own, but it looks even better when you consider what Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class is becoming. The headliners in the class are the quarterbacks, but the wide receiver room is quietly stacking up. Osani Gayles, who entered the cycle as a 4-star, has since been reclassified as a 5-star recruit. Pair him with Simmons, and the Crimson Tide’s future at the position starts to look considerably deeper.

The truth is, Simmons may not stay a 3-star for long. His skill set suggests a player who could see his rating climb as more evaluators get eyes on him between now and signing day. That kind of upside, combined with the in-state flip factor, makes this commitment one of Alabama’s more impactful gets in the cycle so far.

The big fish is still swimming

Of course, not everything is falling perfectly into place for Alabama on the wide receiver recruiting trail. Monshun Sales, widely considered one of the top receivers in the 2027 class, has been a heavy target for the Crimson Tide. But from what it looks like right now, Alabama may not be in the best position with Sales, as programs like Indiana, Texas, and Ohio State appear to be in stronger standing.

That being said, landing Simmons softens the blow if Sales ultimately goes elsewhere. Alabama doesn’t need to hit on every big-name target if the program continues to win battles like this one, pulling a talented in-state prospect away from Auburn.

Why this flip matters beyond the rankings

Flipping a recruit from your arch-rival carries weight that goes beyond star ratings. It sends a message to future recruits in the state of Alabama that the Crimson Tide is the destination, not the fallback. It reinforces the program’s dominance in in-state recruiting, and it takes a weapon away from Auburn’s future roster in the process.

The bottom line is, Alabama added a talented wide receiver to a 2027 class that needed one, and they did so by taking him directly from the Tigers. Whether Simmons ends up as a 3-star or a 4-star by the time he signs, the Crimson Tide got better, and Auburn got worse. That’s a win anyway you measure it.
