The Alabama Crimson Tide had its annual A-day scrimmage nearly three weeks ago, and the main takeaway was that Keelon Russell should be QB No.1 in Tuscaloosa. That may remain true, but Kalen DeBoer was quick to point out that Austin Mack was dealing with injuries and that the competition is still very open.

Well, the summer is almost here, and when it arrives in Tuscaloosa, every position battle, including the one at the quarterback position, will be kicked into high gear. Well, Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer has a message for his two signal callers.

Kalen DeBoer issues a message to his quarterbacks

“They know that a year ago there was so much improvement by all of them, and I think that was – even with Ty, going from the spring to the fall, he came back and made another big jump. And that’s what I would expect out of these guys, is as good as they did and a nice job that they had performing this spring, I’d expect for them to take another big leap here in the summer,” said DeBoer at the Regions Tradition Pro-Am via On3.

“They’re going to work hard, you’re never going to question that. They’re early-morning guys, in there early. They’re real pros, much like the other guys that have been here in this program that have done the same thing.”

Alabama’s quarterback battle is one of the biggest stories in all of college football. With Mack, it’s year four in the system after he signed with Kalen DeBoer during his time in Washington before transferring to Tuscaloosa.

Spring ball may have given Russell the upper hand, but everyone knows that when camp starts, that is when everything will be determined. Coach DeBoer has not said that he wants to put a hard deadline on when he makes his decision, but he did mention two weeks before the season starts as a date to watch.

Russell was lights out in the spring game, and there is no question that he has one of the highest ceilings at quarterback when it comes to prospects.

Time will tell who wins out.
