Florida HC Jon Sumrall has his eye on interesting recruit at a position the Gators haven’t prioritzed enough
The 2027 recruiting class for the Florida Gators has had a major focus on the trenches, and other positions are starting to get the same.
The 2027 recruiting class for the Florida Gators has been a huge storyline during the offseason. Head coach Jon Sumrall has turned all the momentum on its head when it comes to recruiting. After Billy Napier had massive struggles last summer, Sumrall already has 16 commitments in the 2027 class, including five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, who is the first five-star offensive lineman committed to the program since 2015 in Martez Ivey.
Among the 16 commitments, only six are on the defensive side of the football. Among those six, not a single one is at linebacker. They have missed out on a couple of high-end recruits at the position, but they haven’t stopped pursuing on defense.
Florida Gators 2027 Recruiting Class Highlights
- 247 Sports has the Florida Gators 2027 recruiting class ranked No. 4 in the nation.
- While the Gators have just one five-star recruit thus far in Hiller, they are relentlessly pursuing No. 1 overall recruit Jalen Brewster.
- Sumrall has secured three top-100 recruits: Hiller, offensive tackle Elijah Hutcheson, and wide receiver Elias Pearl.
Florida Gators in top-four of intriguing linebacker recruit
The linebacker position isn’t on the back burner for the Gators, and it’s coming to light with three-star linebacker Drew Williams, who included Florida in his final four. They join the Kentucky Wildcats, Oregon Ducks, and Miami Hurricanes.
It’s an interesting final four for Williams, who is the 41st-ranked overall linebacker per Rivals. Out of Canton, Georgia, Williams is 6-1 and 205 pounds with room on his frame to grow and develop. Where this gets interesting with recruiting rankings is how he’s so coveted by teams with such a low ranking. Not everyone gets a high ranking right away, and Williams being coveted by four power-four programs is a strong signal that he’s undervalued.
Williams will be making a visit to Gainesville on the weekend of June 18-20th, which will be a major weekend for the Gators. They need to make a major impression on him to secure a commitment, but with the energy of the staff, don’t be surprised if they do just that.
