Florida Gators are hosting No. 1 recruit Jalen Brewster at the perfect time, and could flip him thanks to Brendan Sorsby
Jon Sumrall has a massive opportunity on his hands with two five-star recruits in Gainesville, and it could change everything.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall is dominating the recruiting world after just six months on the job.
Last week Sumrall landed a whopping six recruits to bring the total up to 22 overall. It’s also the No. 5 overall recruiting class in the nation per Rivals, a place where Billy Napier was never able to get to.
This weekend, the Gators are hosting two of the top recruits in the nation, and thanks to one program on the verge of metaphorical collapse, they could land one of the top recruits.
Florida Gators 2027 Recruiting Class
- In Jon Sumrall’s first season, the Florida Gators have the No. 5 overall recruiting class with 22 commitments.
- Among their commitments, four of their top ones are on the offensive line, including five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller.
- Sumrall is chasing multiple five-star recruits, including two at wide receiver and the No. 1 overall recruit in Texas Tech commitment Jalen Brewster.
Florida Gators could land No. 1 overall recruit Jalen Brewster
This weekend is huge for Sumrall for two reasons: five-star wide receiver Easton Royal and five-star defensive lineman and No. 1 overall recruit Jalen Brewster. Getting official visits from two players who are already committed to the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders, respectively, is huge. The latter is where things get interesting.
Over the past few days, Texas Tech has done irreparable damage to its football program with how they have handled the Brendan Sorsby situation. On Monday, he was granted an injunction that will allow him to play next season after initially being suspended for gambling on both his team and college football as a whole. Not just a couple of bets, but more of a compulsive habit. NCAA rules are perfectly clear about gambling as well, making this clear.
This week, the head of the NIL collective, Cody Campbell, and head coach, Joey McGuire, have made embarrassing comments, including comparing this to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State. On Thursday, they released a 20-minute video on Twitter explaining why Sorsby should get to play, and it was not well-received by anyone. In fact, the Big 12 is looking at ways to avoid playing the Red Raiders, along with how they can suspend Sorsby themselves.
Where does that leave the Gators? With the uncertainty and poor perception of the program, this could be an opportunity for Sumrall to put the hard sell on Brewster. The Gators already came on in a big way to get Brewster on campus the first two times, and now that it’s an official visit, he is taking the program seriously. Continuing to show stability, energy, and a united effort to get a commitment from Brewster could be just what they need to make it happen.
None of this could make enough of an impact to land Brewster, but the ever-evolving situation in Lubbock could be just what the Gators need.
