Recruiting with the Florida Gators has been great under head coach Jon Sumrall. After Billy Napier had just two commits before the beginning of May in 2025, Sumrall has a whopping 10 with two more in safety Kailib Dillard and running back Andrew Beard set to commit next week.

One position that has been an issue for the Gators has been quarterback. They haven’t had stability at the position since Kyle Trask in 2020. Under Steve Spurrier, you always felt confident in who was playing quarterback. Now, there seem to be more questions than answers.

Sumrall is looking to end that. He landed four-star quarterback Davin Davidson right before the spring game and is looking to land another.

Florida Gators in contention for top 2028 quarterback recruit

While they brought in Will Griffin this past December and have Davidson for 2027, the 2028 class currently has zero commits, and the quarterback position is still a priority.

The Gators are in the top seven of four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear of Alexander City, Alabama.

Early on, Rivals has Preyear ranked as the 63rd overall recruit and the No. 5 quarterback in the 2028 class. The 6-2 and 190-pound prospect has a lot of suitors. So far, Preyear has visited Gainesville twice among his 12 total visits: January 24th and March 27th. Right now, the Gators are third on the Rivals’ Recruiting Prediction Machine at 14.0%, behind the Alabama Crimson Tide (23.8%) and Auburn Tigers (35.7%).

Adding Preyear would be awesome for the future. He has a live arm that can attack every blade of grass with power and touch. He is confident and consistent in his dropback with good poise and movement skills. Preyear can also throw the ball well on the move and eat up large chunks of yards.

It’s great to see Sumrall continue attacking the quarterback position, and not being content with the idea of one player like Napier was with DJ Lagway. There will be options in the quarterback room for Sumrall over the next few years, and that could be massive for a College Football Playoff run.
