Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has already improved recruiting to the Nth degree during his short time in Gainesville.

Having already landed their first five-star offensive lineman since Martez Ivey in 2015 with Maxwell Hiller and the quarterback of the future in four-star Davin Davidson, Sumrall is showing that his work is far from done.

Over the weekend, Sumrall landed four-star wide receiver Anthony Jennings from Fort Lauderdale, and Monday brought a commitment on defense.

Florida Gators land high-upside defensive tackle

Sumrall continued his success on Monday by landing three-star defensive lineman De’Voun Kendrick. He chose the Gators over Texas A&M Aggies, Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, and Louisville Cardinals.

The Gators haven’t been afraid to take shots at lower-ranked recruits who are ready to take a step forward. He is a strong presence on the interior with really intriguing athleticism. At 6-4 and 300 pounds, the Tampa Bay product Kendrick is the 831st-ranked recruit in the nation and 90th-ranked recruit in Florida.

Where the biggest piece of intrigue lies is the versatility. He displays some ability to bend the arc off the edge and gets penetration in the backfield. Once he engages with blockers, Kendrick showcases length to hold up and win the leverage battle with consistency. There is a lot to like, and getting in early on could help the Gators steal a major riser throughout the process.

Being in the Gators’ backyard allows them to get an up-close and personal look at him. It’s a fascinating process to see what will happen over the course of time. Kendrick is the first defensive lineman to commit to Sumrall, and only the third player on defense.
