Monday morning brought Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall making a decision with his starting quarterback, naming Aaron Philo the guy for Week 1 against the Florida Atlantic Owls. It wasn’t a surprise for Philo to get the job, as the Gators brought him over with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech.

Philo has a couple of games to get warmed up before heading to Auburn on September 19th. Even so, Sumrall did leave some ambiguity with the position, and that could open the door for Tramell Jones Jr.

After losing the competition, moving forward for Jones means the backup quarterback job. He’s got the talent to be a starting quarterback at the FBS level, and he may get that chance sooner rather than later.

Jones took it in stride, and is going to use this to continue getting better.

“I was definitely disappointed, but after the decision, I had two choices to make. I could either lay my head down … or I could keep competing. I can keep working. I can keep getting better … that’s what I’m gonna do.”

This is exactly the kind of mentality that you want in your locker room. Jones is just a redshirt freshman who held the backup quarterback job last season after winning it in fall camp. Obviously, this isn’t the result he wanted, but his response is perfect.

Sumrall coming in here and having this kind of culture is great to see. This is exactly where things ideally should be going into his first season. If he can continue having this, all bets are off as far as what the future holds for the Gators.
