Miami Hurricanes WR Malachi Toney arrived on the national college football scene in a very big way last year, and quickly.

The true freshman wide receiver, who wasn’t even 18 years old when the season started, had his coming out party before the eyes of the nation on Labor Day weekend against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He totaled six catches for 82 yards and a big first half touchdown to help the Hurricanes clip the Irish 27-24.

It was a win that would pay dividends for the Hurricanes all the way into December, and it was just the start for Toney. He finished with an FBS-high 109 catches, which he turned into 1211 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns. He also had a rushing score and two passing touchdowns and added 298 punt return yards.

Without question, he was a primary factor in helping Miami make it all the way to their first national championship game since the 2002 season.

And now, Toney is getting his proper due. EA Sports released its cover photo for College Football 27, and he found himself in the middle of the trio that included Ole Miss RB Kewan Lacy and Oregon QB Dante Moore.

It’s not hard to understand why. Toney is arguably the most exciting and versatile player in college football right now.

ESPN commentator Greg McElroy recently said Toney was the better all-around football player in comparison to Ohio State star WR Jeremiah Smith, and given all that he does on the field, it’s hard to argue with.

Toney should also be poised for another big season in 2026. Miami landed one of the best quarterbacks in the transfer portal in Darian Mensah, and he’ll have another outstanding wide receiver to take the pressure off of him in Mensah’s ex-Duke teammate Cooper Barkate.

As such, Toney should be poised to follow up on an incredible freshman year with another strong season this fall in South Florida.
