Notre Dame football has a chance to put together its best defensive line recruiting class in a very long time. Head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, and the Fighting Irish are off to a strong start in the 2027 class up front. They already hold commitments from Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep defensive end Aidan O’Neil and Chicago (Ill.) St. Patrick defensive tackle David Folorunsho, and that is a great foundation to build on.

One of the more interesting 2027 targets still on the board is Rabun Gap (Ga.) Nacoochee defensive lineman Segun Alexander, a talented player who was a previous member of the 2028 recruiting class. When Alexander opted to reclassify to the 2027 class a couple of weeks ago, he quickly became an intriguing target for the Notre Dame staff. The team is set to make a push for the Georgia native down the stretch.

The Fighting Irish took a strong step for Alexander after he solidified an official visit to South Bend on June 19-21. The talented defender will also be making trips to Cal (May 29-31), Texas A&M (June 5-7), Clemson (June 12-14), and Vanderbilt (June 16-18). Notre Dame having the final official visit is a good sign, assuming that the recruitment stays open that long.

Going into a very important several weeks, the Aggies are considered to be the favorite for Alexander. Notre Dame does, however, have a chance to close that gap quickly. Freeman and Co. have had a very strong closing rate during official visits the last couple of years, especially during the previous offseason. Let’s see if they can work some of that magic with Alexander.

Segun Alexander’s recruiting background

Alexander was considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms for the 2028 recruiting class, but that has changed since reclassifying. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Alexander currently sits as a three-star, the No. 505 overall player, the No. 61 defensive lineman, and the No. 61 player from the state of Georgia for the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings will rise after a big senior season from Alexander.

If those rankings don’t impress you, and they probably don’t for now, Alexander’s offer list certainly will. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Tennessee, Miami, Auburn, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Cal, Michigan State, West Virginia, UNC, Kansas, and Syracuse, among several others.

The 6-4, 275-pound defensive lineman put together a tremendous season in 2025. In 12 games, Alexander managed to collect 36 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks. Alexander also had 19 more quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and another fumble recovery. His upside as a playmaking interior presence is extremely high on the college level.
