At one point in the game against the Penn State Nittany Lions, it looked like the Ohio State Buckeyes were going to lose star safety Caleb Downs for the rest of the game and the first half against Purdue. That didn’t happen, as the initial targeting ruling on Downs wasn’t upheld — which even seemed like a surprise to him.

“God gave me one right there,” Downs said last Saturday after the game. “Really just appreciative of the moment. He showed mercy on me.”

Penn State player calls out referees after Caleb Downs hit

“I think it was kind of BS that they called it back … But I think that’s just how OState refs operate,” Penn State wide receiver Khalil Dinkins said on Wednesday. “Sometimes they give them some penalties that you know they wouldn’t give to nobody else.”

Downs delivered a hard hit on Dinkins as he went up to make a catch in the fourth quarter and was flagged for unnecessary roughness after the targeting call was overturned. If the targeting penalty had been upheld, Downs would have missed the final seven minutes against Penn State in a game that Ohio State won 38-14 and the first 30 minutes against Purdue. Ohio State is heavily favored against Purdue, but Downs missing any time could have impacted his individual accolades by season’s end.

Dinkins’ comments don’t mean much, as there were missed calls both ways, and the better football team won decisively on Saturday. Ohio State also accepted its first pass interference penalty against an opposing defense this season — which is almost hard to believe eight games in. Ohio State has games remaining against Purdue, UCLA, and Rutgers before traveling to Michigan for The Game. All of the Buckeyes’ goals are still in front of them as the No. 1 team in the country, and not losing Downs for any time due to the targeting call was a win — even if it was a questionable ruling in the end.
