There’s no denying that the Oregon Ducks made an immediate impact in the Big Ten, winning the conference in their first season.
Dan Lanning’s Ducks went 12-0 before falling to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff in lopsided fashion—a revenge win for the Buckeyes after losing to Oregon on the road earlier in the 2024 season.
One former Oregon star admits he’s still holding a grudge after how last season ended. Some friendly banter even emerged during an NFL training camp.
“Ohio State [is] gonna get beat in the championship this year,” Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Tez Johnson said on Sunday. “I got a lot of receipts that I’m keeping right now, because yeah, I hold grudges. I’m sorry. I hold grudges.”
In Oregon’s win over Ohio State last October, Johnson played a key role with seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. But in the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes held him to five receptions for just 32 yards in their dominant 41-21 victory.
Tez Johnson singles out Buckeyes star Jeremiah Smith
“I mean, obviously I wanted to win the Rose Bowl, but we came up short,” Johnson said. “So we’re gonna go back to the Rose Bowl this year, and if it’s Ohio State, we’re gonna come at Jeremiah Smith.”
Ohio State hasn’t won the Big Ten since 2020—something Ryan Day is still looking to change in Columbus. But if the Buckeyes make it back, Tez Johnson is sending a friendly warning: the Ducks are coming for Ohio State’s top playmaker.
The Buckeyes aren’t scheduled to play Oregon in the regular season this year. Ohio State starts with a big task of facing Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns in Week 1.
