If you are from Ohio and you grew up playing football, you probably dreamed of playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes can’t take every player from Ohio who may be capable of playing in Columbus, and it comes down to a numbers game.

Ohio State has put a border around the state of Ohio for the most part when it comes to the top players. The offensive line is always a major point of state for the Buckeyes, but they want to keep the best skill players around too.

The Buckeyes watched a 2026 running back they had interest in end up with the Michigan Wolverines, and now he’s thrown some shade at Ryan Day.

Michigan running back pulls no punches with feelings about Ohio State’s Ryan Day

Michigan freshman RB Jonathan Brown was a three-star player from St. Francis de Sales right in Columbus. Brown was a high school teammate of RJ Day, but he never earned an offer from Ohio State. It still doesn’t seem to sit well with Brown.

John McCallister of Coaches Corner asked Brown in a recent interview if he was disappointed with how things played out.

“A little bit? I would say it wasn’t disappointing. I felt more disrespected because I knew Coach Day personally and we had conversations, but yeah, I just felt disrespected in that way,” Brown stated.

Ohio State was never one of the eight schools to offer Brown, as Rutgers was the only other Big Ten school to join in with Michigan during his recruitment. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound running back was the No. 49 player at the position and No. 40 player in the state of Ohio, per 247 Sports’ Composite.

The Buckeyes went with four-star recruits and current freshman Legend Bey and Favour Akih as their two running backs in the class of 2026. Akih was the in-state player from Delaware Hayes the Buckeyes rolled with over Brown.

Sometimes these stories come back to bite teams who overlook players in their own backyard. Brown should be working to become a difference maker at Michigan, not only for his future, but to show Ohio State they messed this one up.
